Friday 1/31/14: Homework

Block A:

  • Procure your supplies for class: a 3-ring binder, a composition notebook, a glue stick.
  • Find one artifact to inspire some writing and glue it into your composition book for Monday's class. 
  • Complete the contact info sheet and have your parent or guardian sign it. Return it to me on Monday.
Block B:
Nice work today making your vocabulary story presentations! Clever writing, cool costumes, and collaborative effort by all! Hooray!

  • This weekend, please work on the Article of the Week (minimum wage debate). All work due on Wednesday!
  • Please follow the format included below to complete your written response on the AoW:

Here is the reading schedule for our work with the novel Room.  Remember that for each new section of the novel, you will need to complete a "SignPosts" map, using evidence from the text to support your observations.

Block A:
Bring your Six word Memoir.
Read the excerpts from the nonfiction texts I gave you. Complete the analysis sheet for your assigned story for Friday.
Bring your independent reading book to Friday's class!


Block B: 
Prepare for our Vocabulary Festival of Fun on Friday (how's that for alliteration!)

Here are the guidelines:

You must write a story. You have this block to complete it.
  • It must be “inspired by” one of the provided illustrations.
  • It must contain all of the assigned vocabulary words, used correctly (consider nuanced meaning as well as part of speech).
  • It must somehow incorporate the words/places/people on the cards you are given.
  • Additionally, you must include the following: 
    • One sentence must contain a colon.
    • One sentence must contain a statistic.
    • One sentence must contain a metaphor.
    • One sentence must focus on a sensory detail (taste/touch/smell/sound/sight).
    • One sentence must include repetition for emphasis.
    • One sentence must be a rhetorical question.
    • One sentence must start with a subordinating conjunction.
    • One sentence must be just one word.
    • One sentence must be 15 words long, and must contain a coordinating conjunction.
    • One sentence must contain a semi-colon.
GOOD LUCK!

At the end of the block, divide up the work in the following way, due FRIDAY:

  • One person takes the story home and types it up.
  • One person creates an illustration to accompany it (to be shown in class and likely displayed).
  • One person (two, if there are 4 people in your group) prepares a dramatic reading of the story for Friday’s (Monday’s) class. Costume suggested.

Look for a work of non-fiction to read.

Read your independent reading book and write a paragraph reflection in your reading journal.

Read and take notes on Chapter 15 in Strength. Bring your notes from Chapters 13 and 14 to class too. 

Block C and E: 
Continue to work on your mid-term portfolio due next week. 
Read pages 1-21(stop at page break) in Room. Take notes on your questions, observations, and connections as you read either in your notebook or on sticky notes. Bring your notes to class as you will be able to use them in an activity we will do when you return.

Block E:

  • Work on the portfolio assignment that I distributed in class today. Remember, you have 5 reflections to write and 3 artifacts to include. We will have the  mobile lab in class on Monday to work, so be sure to bring your materials so that you can be productive.
  • Read your independent reading book. 
Block F:
  • Today we took a quiz on Chapters 21 and 22. Many of you were behind in the reading and therefore could not take the quiz.This weekend, catch up, annotate, and be ready to write about and discuss Chapters 23 and 24 on Monday. If you were absent on Friday, be prepared to take the quiz you missed in class today at the start of class on Monday. 
  • Read your independent reading book.
Block A: 
  • Continue to work on assembling your final portfolio and independent project due on January 21st.
Block B:
  • Read Chapters 13 and 14 for Tuesday. Use a note taking strategy that works for you for each chapter that you read. Remember, we discussed a variety of methods you can try:
    • Cornell Notes
    • Sticky Notes
    • Double-sided journal entry
    • Mind-map (you may want to take notes on a variety of topics)
      • memory
      • tough questions
      • repetition/patterns
      • identity/character development
      • a-ha moments
  • Bring your notes to class, as you will be able to use them to write a response.

Revisions on your journal entries are due tomorrow. Remember to use the text for support! I should see lots of references to King's word choice and characterization.

Block C and E:
Work on the Article of the Week assignment on human trafficking that I gave you in class today. Remember to follow the directions--there are multiple parts to the assignment! Due on Thursday (Block C) and Friday (Block E).

Block F: 

  • Read and annotate Chapter 18 and Chapter 19 in The Body. Complete the chart on the handout distributed in class today. 
  • Revise your journal responses. Be thorough and thoughtful. Use the text as support. All revisions are due on Wednesday 1/8/14
