Friday 9/20/13: Homework

Block A:

1. Finish "Why Write" pieces, print out and bring to class on Monday or email to copy.center@hudson.k12.ma.us
2. Complete 1 Smash book entry over the weekend. Include an artifact. 

Block B: 

1. Read and mark up the poem"Influences" by Alexie in the packet for Monday. Be prepared to present your observation and connections in a discussion. 

2. Read your independent reading book for at least 15 minutes a night. 

3. Finish your vocabulary story using our last vocabulary word of the week. In case you forgot, here is a picture of a baby who exemplifies the word:


Block C: 
1. Read the first 2 chapters of True Diary (pages 1-13). Write a response starting with: 

• I think...
• I notice...
• I wonder....

2. Read your independent reading book for at least 15 minutes a night.

Thursday 9/19: Homework

Tonight is Open House Night for parents from 6:30-8:30! Hope to see you there!

1.  Vocabulary story swap and independent reading time. 
2. In your reading journal, choose 2 prompts from your yellow bookmark and write a response for each.

2. Read for at least 15 minutes tonight and log your progress

Wednesday 9/18: Homework

Block A:

Create a colorful Reading Poster for the "Guess What We are Reading" Wall.

Block B: 
1.  Make a (colorful)reading poster for our reading wall.
2. Add on to your friend's vocabulary story using today's words:  reverence and compassion.

Block C: 

Write a reading response following the instructions on the yellow "recipe" sheet. Due on Thursday.

Tuesday 9/17: homework

Block E:

Use the Reading Response Recipe to write a reaction to the film. Type and bring to class on Thursday. 

Block F:

Use your notes on "on Turning Ten" and " The Journey" to created a mind map that traces similarities and differences in the two texts. Think about what both poems say about growing up. Use specific language from the poems on your map.

Block A: 

Continue drafting your "Why Write" piece. Lab time tomorrow. Find an artifact for your "window" story and attach it in your smashbook.


Remember, tomorrow is a half day-- blocks A, B, C meet. Thursday will be a day 4. 

Reading Response Recipe

Respond to the text we’ve studied by writing a 1-2 page reaction using the following recipe:

1.            1st paragraph—SUMMARIZE the text. Use the TITLE and                                                                              AUTHOR in your summary.

2.            2nd Paragraph—Describe 3 OBSERVATIONS you have made as you read/viewed the text. Be specific.

3.            3rd Paragraph—Develop 2 QUESTIONS you have  pondered as you read/viewed the text.

4.            4th Paragraph—Develop 1 OPINION about the text.

5.            5th Paragraph—Make at least 2 connections to other texts or SCHEMA (your background experience or                                                                               knowledge)

Monday 9/13: Homework

Block f:

Annotate texts (Homewood excerpt and "The Journey") for discussion tomorrow.  

Read at least 15 minted at home tonight. 

Block A:

Read "The Pony Problem" and write a Reader's Response (follow the guidelines on the sheet with the goat on it!)Prepare for a discussion on Tuesday. 

Block B:

1. Read and annotate the article on the Pine Ridge reservation from National Geographic.
2. Complete a Reading Response on "30 Days" 
3. Read for 15 minutes each night.

Block c:

Use the Reading Response Recipe to write a reaction to the film. Type and bring to class on Wednesday.

Friday 9/13: Homework

Block A:

Open a google doc and begin drafting your "Why Write" piece--we will continue working on Monday.

Block B: 

1. Read "Indian Education" and write a response using the handout.
2. Read for 15 minutes and log.
3. Add to your vocabulary story--2 new words: Compromise and Prosperity

Block C:

Today we continued watching our first text of the year-Big Fish.  This weekend, please continue writing your "so far, I think..." responses.  Think about what the film seems to be about. What is the film trying to say about the nature of storytelling? I will be checking your responses on Monday.
