Monday 11/25: Homework

Block A:

Tonight I want you to take a look at the two websites I showed you in class today. The first one features a really great writing opportunity, especially if you hope to one day publish your work. Check out:

Next, as part of a dialogue project that we will be starting tomorrow, I would like you to spend some time at this fabulous screenplay warehouse. Search through the zillions of scripts on file here, and see if you can find one of your favorites. Remember, the goal is to find a screenplay for a film that you love and a film that you have access to, as you will need to watch the scene in order to complete this project. Narrow down your film selection and find a scene that you think contains particularly great dialogue. Bring in your ideas, and I will show you some models tomorrow! It will be AWESOME!

Block B:

1. Your AoW on teens and e-cigarettes is due tomorrow. Please be sure to follow ALL of the directions!
2. Read and annotate Chapter 3 in Strength. Focus your reading of the language Deo uses to describe the SETTING.

Block C:

A great MANY of you did not complete the assignment on "The Yellow Wallpaper" that was due today. Because we will not meet again until after the holiday, it would behoove you to turn in your missing work before Wednesday, as I will not be accepting the "Yellow Wallpaper" responses after the holiday break.
  • Please continue to read your independent reading book and have a great holiday.

Friday 11/22/12: Homework

  • Over the weekend, please read Chapter 2 in Strength in What Remains. Make notes of your observations, questions and connections and bring your notes with you to class.
  • Read your independent reading book as well!

Block C and E:

Check out this woman,
"creeping about behind that pattern.
..I don't like it one bit!"

We finished "The Yellow Wallpaper" today! I was so happy to be a part of such an enthusiastic discussion. You did a nice job reading closely and thinking analytically. Over the weekend, I would like you to consider the story, as well as the other non-fiction texts we looked at in class, including "Why I Wrote 'The Yellow Wallpaper,'" as well as the article about Mitchell's "Rest Cure." Please write a three paragraph response, using the following recipe:
  • Your first paragraph is a summary of the short story.
  • Your second paragraph is a reaction to the story.  “I think...” “I wonder...” “I notice...”
  • Your third paragraph explores connections to the story.  What in your schema  (background knowledge) relates to the story?

Block F:

Today you worked independently to develop your ideas and support the essay you will be writing over the next week or so. This weekend, continue to map out your ideas and develop your argument. When we return to class on Tuesday, I will be giving you some writing guidelines and we will be drafting your responses.

Tuesday November 19: Homework

Block A:
Today we worked on adding beats and tags into the dialogue we've been writing with a partner. Tomorrow we will finish the scenes in class. Tonight, as part of our effort to hear good dialogue, I'd like you to eavesdrop on a conversation between two people you do not know. Put yourself in a place where you can listen to your surroundings and record what you hear from real people. Sit at a booth at a coffee shop or a restaurant, hang out on your front porch and listen to people walking by, drop into a barber shop and listen. You get the idea!

Block B:
1. Bring in any used novels that you would like to donate to our reading library.
2. Complete the Article of the Week reading response that we started in class today.
3. Study your vocabulary words for tomorrow's quiz. Use the Vocabulary.com site I showed you in class to help prepare! You can find our list here.

Block F:

For Wednesday, prepare your notes on the end of Room for our final Socratic seminar--we will focus on what the novel teaches us about the process of growing up. How do Allie Brosh's blog entries help us to understand Ma's perspective?
Use details from both the novel and the blog to support your ideas.
